Anxiety Treatment in Houston, TX
Generalized anxiety disorder is one of the most common — and most treatable — mental health conditions in adults. Below, what it is, how it shows up, when to seek help, and how we treat it at TRS Health.
What is the difference between anxiety and an anxiety disorder?
It's common to feel anxious from time to time, especially when facing stress. However, excessive, continuous anxiety and worry that feel difficult to control and affect day-to-day activities may be a sign of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GAD can manifest in both children and adults, and living with it is a long-term challenge — in most cases it occurs alongside other anxiety or mood disorders. The good news: GAD can usually be improved with medication, psychotherapy, or both. Lifestyle changes, coping skills, and relaxation strategies can also help.
- Persistent worry or anxiety that is out of proportion to the actual events
- Overthinking plans and solutions to all possible worst-case outcomes
- Perceiving situations as threatening even when they are not
- Difficulty handling uncertainty
- Fear of making wrong decisions and indecisiveness
- Inability to set aside worries
- Feeling on edge or unable to relax
- Difficulty concentrating or feeling your mind "go blank"
- Fatigue
- Difficulty sleeping
- Muscle aches
- Twitching or trembling
- Easily startled or nervousness
- Sweating
- Nausea, diarrhea, or irritable bowel syndrome
- Irritability
Like many mental health conditions, the causes of GAD likely arise from complex interactions between biological and environmental factors, including:
- Differences in brain chemistry and function
- Genetics
- Differences in how threats are perceived
- Development and personality
When to see a doctor
Some anxiety is normal, but you should see your doctor if:
- You feel like you worry too much and it's interfering with work or relationships
- You feel depressed or irritable, have trouble with drinking or drugs, or have other mental health concerns alongside anxiety
- You have suicidal thoughts or behaviors — in this case, seek emergency treatment immediately by calling 988 or going to your nearest emergency room
You don't have to figure this out alone. Book an in-person or telehealth consultation with a mental health provider.
Book a visitTreatment
Treatment decisions are based on how significantly GAD is affecting your ability to function. The two main treatments are psychotherapy and medication, though many patients benefit most from a combination of the two.
Psychotherapy
Also known as talk therapy or counseling, psychotherapy involves working with a therapist to reduce anxiety symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most effective form for GAD. TRS Health does not offer therapy in-house but can refer you to trusted therapists across Houston.
Medication
TRS Health offers psychiatric evaluation and ongoing medication management. Note: we do not prescribe controlled substances such as benzodiazepines (Xanax, Klonopin).

"I called several offices prior to this one, i am so glad i was recommended this one. The lady who answered was so kind and informal. When calling it was a moment of panic and she definitely eased my mind and reassured me of things I wasn't aware of. Mental health is real and there's plenty of people including doctors and higher up people who don't take it seriously. I came in and they made me feel confident and were overall just kind. Smiles everywhere. It costs nothing to be kind. Thank you!!"
