Bipolar Disorder Treatment in Houston, TX
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by unusual shifts in mood, energy, and the ability to carry out day-to-day activities. Below, what it is, how it shows up, when to seek help, and how we treat it at TRS Health.
What is bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, concentration, and the ability to carry out day-to-day activities. These moods range from extremely "up," elated, irritable, and energized periods (known as manic episodes) to very "down," sad, indifferent, or hopeless periods (known as depressive episodes).
People with bipolar disorder often experience:
- Periods of unusually intense emotion ("mood episodes")
- Changes in sleep patterns and activity levels
- Uncharacteristic behaviors
- Feeling "jumpy" or "wired"
- Decreased need for sleep
- Feeling elated or touchy
- Lost appetite
- Risky behavior that shows poor judgment
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Feeling slowed down or restless
- Feeling unable to do even simple things
- Feeling hopeless or worthless; thoughts of death or suicide
Most experts agree there is no single cause of bipolar disorder — it is attributed to many factors, including specific brain structure and family history. Research shows that if a person has a parent or sibling with the disorder, they have an increased chance of developing it themselves.
When to see a doctor
Despite the mood swings, people with bipolar disorder often don't recognize how much their emotional instability disrupts their lives and the lives of their loved ones — and they don't get the treatment they need. Periods of euphoria are always followed by emotional crashes that can leave you depressed and worn out, and perhaps in financial, legal, or relationship trouble. If you have any symptoms of mania or depression, see your doctor or mental health professional.
Emergency help
Suicidal thoughts and behavior are common among people with bipolar disorder. If you have thoughts of hurting yourself, call 911 immediately or call/text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If you have a loved one in danger of suicide, make sure someone stays with them and call 911, or take them to the nearest emergency room if you can do so safely.
You don't have to figure this out alone. Book an in-person or telehealth consultation with a mental health provider.

"Was not a long wait at all. The nurse had a great attitude and made you feel very comfortable. After the nurse the doctor came in. The doctor was very nice. Not stuck up at all. You could feel he cared more about his patients and not trying to do every test he could to fill his pockets. I walked out very happy."
